Band 5/6 Response 1
Chicken Deconstruction/Recontextualised is a humorous, endearing sculpture in the round with a strong visual presence. Approached through the Postmodern frame, each chook recontextualises a Modernist art period. Collage elements on the base include imagery, quotes and Modernist timelines. The audience interacts with the work by arranging the chooks on the base. A broad exploration of sculptural practice is evident in the use of assemblage, papier-maché modelling and construction. The work is sustained, coherent and inventive in its concept and use of material. Technical accomplishment is mixed as some chooks are not fully resolved, particularly the paint application of the Lichtenstein inspired chook. The base has conceptual merit, yet becomes slightly visually confusing when the chooks are placed on it.
