Band 2/3 Response 1
Complexity of Censorship informs the audience that its meaning is about censorship, but the work seems to be commenting on how consumerism destroys the individual. The sculpture is made of manipulated found objects consisting of a doll, crucifix, mannequin, hand, meat hook and a tray with attached items from McDonalds. The face is manipulated with collaged imagery of other face parts. The texta representing blood is insensitively applied to the wrists and ankles. The concept is unclear and may be that we are victims of consumerism or desire to own brand name items. The most successful part of the work is the treatment of the face with interesting areas of layered collage. However, overall, the integration of imagery is poor with little attempt to unify it with the surface areas. The explored concept is literal and naïve in its presentation.
