Band 3/4 Response 1
The subject of the two works is traditional still life arrangements with drawn, brushed and collaged elements. Some objects are arranged to break the edge of the frame; some are heavily outlined with harshly delineated high and low lights; some are treated with colour layers and tonal gradations; and some are essentially very flat. The work demonstrates inconsistency of technical skill and decision-making, with one work more successful than the other. A limited understanding of the still life tradition in Western art history is apparent.
