Band 4/5 Response 1
Study Seahorse consists of six individual pieces: three seahorse studies; and three museum-style specimen boards. Text, including a provocative statement implying art and science are equal, has been included on the display boards. A parched lifeless quality has been achieved using a paper-mâché skin stretched over a wire and cane frame. A third study of a sea horse employs a mosaic technique with tiles embedded in a bluish plaster body and balanced on a welded metal frame. There is a degree of inconsistency in the treatment of the surfaces but the decision to recess certain areas is well considered. This is a sound body of work based strongly on material investigation. The use of text is appropriate for museum display but the claim about art and science is neither resolved nor sustained.
