Band 3/4 Response 1
My Chinese Culture uses selectively lit, printed and repeated still life images, some of which have an unusual aerial viewpoint, to suggest the rituals and aesthetics inherent in traditional Chinese culture. Specific objects indicate meaning and symbolism and one image makes a visual allusion to calligraphy. The selection of objects and the simplicity of the forms display a knowledge and respect for the Chinese culture. Repeated images in differing pastel hues of blue toning and sepia as well as the original black and white print creates a certain calmness and serenity. The repetition tends to be pedantic and the use of symbols is fairly obvious. The aesthetics of the still life genre are evident and there is a degree of technical proficiency in the printing.
