Band 4/5 Response 1
A Woman's Life is an engaging series of works that explores the immediate world of the home and family with a degree of intimacy. The scale of the larger work is initially seductive, as the crowded composition is effective and the negative space between tables and figures is handled well in some areas. Pictorial space is shallow, however, and colour has not been employed to create a sense of depth or plasticity of form. Some aspects of the work are subtle and visually engaging, particularly the rhythm and movement of the large 'yum cha' composition, although the meaning of the work is quickly revealed and interest is not sustained across the entire body of work.
